5 Star Award Sea

This course is ideal for those wanting to explore the possibilities of sea kayaking in advanced environments that require a high level of personal skill and leadership. The training focuses on key areas so as to provide the necessary core skills needed to develop the leadership skills need to lead a group of paddlers in advanced tidal waters and dynamic weather conditions.

What can this course provide me?

Personal Paddling Skills

  • Launching and landing on difficult terrain.
  • Efficient and effective forward paddling.
  • Manoeuvring and control.
  • Navigation on the water and in poor visibility.
  • Rolling in rough water

Rescue Skills

  • Self rescue techniques
  • Towing techniques
  • Dynamic risk assessments and incident management

Safety, Leadership and Group Skills

  • Leadership strategies, judgement and decision-making.
  • Group control and management.

At the end of your training we suggest a development phase. This provides time to consolidate your new skills. We will provide advice and help you to construct an action plan to continue your development and measure your achievements.

What experience do I need to go for my training?

4 Star standard would be the appropriate level of performance for paddlers to begin working towards the Sea 5 Star Award.

 

  • In order to get the best out of this course we also recommend that you have a confident moving water roll.

After my training what does the assessment involve?

To move on to your assessment you will need to fulfil the following:

  • Documented journeys of 20 days leadership paddling on the open sea.
  • Two journeys must take place in different sea areas.
  • One journey must have involved an overnight camp or ‘bivvy’.
  • A journey of a minimum distance of 20 nautical miles.
  • An open crossing of at least 5 nautical miles.
  • Onshore winds reaching at least force 4.
  • Exposure to no landing zones and difficult landings.
  • Tidal streams of at least 4 Knots.
