Roll Clinic (Reconstruct Your Roll)
"Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect"
If you've been having trouble with your roll or have 'lost' your roll altogether this course is ideal for you. Our coaches will assess your roll and design a programme that will target your identified development areas. Weather it be technique or confidence, you can be assured that together we will get you back on track and enjoying the sport you love.
What does the course offer me?
It’s always surprising to see how many paddlers have rolls that allow them to “just get by". They slog it out with a doubt in the back of there heads that when capsizing there is a chance they might not roll up. At KJO we work towards a 100% confident roll.
There are many of reasons why a roll may start to fail, common explanations include water conditions, injury and self doubt. The one thing that is true, no matter what the explanation, once you have failed you must rebuild. At KJO this is the point where we start, we recognise what happened, give solutions and then provide strategies for development so that it does not happen again.
These 3hour sessions provide the opportunity to practice your roll with an expert on hand. These experts will tap into their tool box of coaching ideas and come up with a range of solutions and development opportunities.
After this course you will understand what is messing with your. You will have the information to put together an action plan to ensure continued development for your roll.
How do I know if I have a bad trend in my roll?
If you have a roll but find it energy zapping or inconsistent you may have developed a bad trend in your technique, here’s a brief list of the most common problems:
- Diving of the paddle blade whilst performing the roll generally is a sign of undeveloped paddle dexterity, a common problem with lack of wrist movement or miss aligned blade during the paddle stroke motion.
- Lifting the head too early whilst in the second phase of the roll. This is a fight against your natural instinct to get your head out of the water as quickly as possible. Unfortunately doing this severely hinders the roll.
- Hanging on the blade to long is in science terms a “proactive habit block”, this means having a habit that works in one environment and then trying to use this in another. Trouble is all habits are not transferable.
- Leaning on the back deck is an effective means of keeping a low centre of gravity during the roll. This method that can be used for developing a foundation from which to evolve. However for more advance techniques in some environments it becomes the reason capsize occurs in the first place.
- Using lots of energy – it’s all strength and no technique or you’re so tight that the body has to work on an adrenaline level whenever you capsize. The most sure fire way to cause injury!
- Water Confidence can be easily over looked. All KJO coaches are trained in using mental rehearsal in a practical way. This aids development of confidence and technique.
